Cedella Marley officially tendered her resignation as global ambassador for the Reggae Girlz on Thursday (January 4), citing a worsening rift between the senior women’s squad and administrators at the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF). Marley, CEO of Tuff Gong International, said she was disappointed with the “noncommital” tone of JFF executives in recent months amid its ongoing impasse with the Reggae Girlz team and concluded that the federation is no longer receptive to any attempts at reconcilation. The Guinness Sounds of Greatness sound system competition is back this year, and is set to kick off this Saturday, October 17, at venuesto be announced. Last year, it was Rebel-T that won the title over Bodyguard in the finals, and this year there will be sixteen of Jamaica’s top sound systems going up against each other overseveral rounds of competition. The winning sound system will walk away with just over J$1 million in prize money. R&B singer-songwriter Ne-Yo is a father for the first time. His girlfriend Monyetta Shaw went into early labor Friday night and had a baby girl. The baby's name is Madilyn Grace Smith. The birth took place in an Atlanta Georgia hospital. The baby was due to be born in January 2011.
Sean Kingston has regained consciousness following the horrific jet ski crash in Miami last Sunday. Kingston still needs a machine to help him with his breathing, but he has reportedly opened his eyes and has communicated with nods and gestures to friends and family. Kingston is making progress every day, but it will be at least two weeks till he may be well enough to go home.
Officials in Jamaica say citizens and visitors to the island must now present a negative COVID-19 test result no greater than three days before their travel date this week. Right now, visitors to Jamaica have 10 days to submit a negative COVID-19 result to enter the island. The new initiative, which takes effect Thursday, is part of the government’s effort to curtail a surge in cases. The prime minister said funerals already scheduled through March 7 can proceed as planned, with a maximum of 15 people, including the funeral service staff. The 2009 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade will feature an interesting mix of musical performances when it kicks off its 83rd annual parade on November 26th. The son of Bob Marley is scheduled to perform alongside pop music veterans Carly Simon and Cyndi Lauper, opera singer Andrea Bocelli and country music star Billy Currington. Other musical performers include Gloria Gaynor, American Idol's Katherine McPhee, rock band Boys like Girls and Jimmy Fallon and his late night band, The Roots.
The ex-leader of the 90's R&B group Jodeci Donald "DeVante Swing" DeGrate Jr. was arrested at a Subway in Burbank, CA this past weekend. The police received a call from a concerned citizen after DeVante was sloppily crashing into tables. When officers arrived, they arrested the 41-year-old singer for being drunk in public and took him to a nearby jail. DeVante was released after cops determined he had finally sobered up, owever he wasn't be charged with a crime.
About 49 people were killed and dozens more were injured when at least one shooter opened fire at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. Police confirm there are 49 people dead in the attack, 41 people were killed in the Deans Ave mosque, with seven killed at the Linwood mosque. Another person died in hospital. A 28-year-old man has been charged with murder and is due to appear in the Christchurch District Court tomorrow morning. Another person was arrested earlier today however that was not related to these events. The number of those being treated in hospital has been updated to 48 people.
La Soufriere volcano fired an enormous amount of ash and hot gas early Monday in the biggest explosive eruption yet since volcanic activity began on the eastern Caribbean island of St. Vincent late last week, with officials worried about the lives of those who have refused to evacuate. There were no immediate reports of injuries or death, but government officials were scrambling to respond to the latest eruption, which was even bigger than the first eruption that occurred Friday morning. Roughly 16,000 people who live in communities close to the volcano had been evacuated under government orders on Thursday, but an unknown number have remained behind and refused to move. Prime Minister the Hon. Bruce Golding says the economic measures that the Government has put in place are now bearing fruit, and are set to put the country on a sound economic path. Delivering a lecture at the Brookings Institute in Washington, D.C., yesterday, the Prime Minister pointed out that while the country is experiencing economic growth in certain areas, more needs to be done in order to reap even greater economic success. The visas of five of Jamaica’s top entertainers have been revoked. According to information from the Fraud Prevention Arm of the United States Embassy in Kingston, the visas of Bounty Killer, Mavado, Beenie Man, Adonia and selector Ricky Trooper are now being cancelled. An advisory was sent out to the airlines not to allow any of the entertainers on flights bound for the United States. The document then names Moses Anthony Davis (Beenie Man) two visas; Garfield Augustus McKoy (Ricky Trooper), two visas; Sheldon Ricardo Aitana Lawrence, (Aidonia); David Brooks (Mavado), two visas; and Rodney Basil Price (Bounty Killer) two visas, as those persons whose visas are in the process of being revoked. Port Royal is located at the mouth of the Kingston Harbour, in southeastern Jamaica. Founded in 1518, it was the centre of shipping commerce in the Caribbean Sea during the latter half of the 17th century. It was destroyed by an earthquake in 1692 and subsequent fires, hurricanes, flooding and another earthquake in 1907. Jamaican officials plan to renovate a historic port that attracted infamous pirates including Henry Morgan and Anne Bonny in the late 1600s, when it was one of the island's most important commercial centers. Carnival Cruise Lines representatives are expected to finalize an agreement with the government May 11 to build a new pier at Port Royal, according to Transportation Minister Michael Henry.
Jo Mersa Marley has died at 31 years old. His cause of death has not yet been released however it's being reported that Jo Mersa suffered an asthma attack and was found in a vehicle Tuesday morning.. Jo is the grandson of Bob Marley and son of Stephen Marley, whose impact on the genre and the music industry as a whole has spanned decades. Jo Mersa Marley was born in Jamaica and moved to Miami when he was 11 years old. Following his father and grandfather’s footsteps, he began writing music in middle school and released his first song, “My Girl,” as a teen. He was known for songs such as “Burn it Down,” “Made It,” and “No Way Out.”
Singjay Serani is gearing up for the release of his first U.S. full length album titled “No Games” later this month. The album comes hot on the heels of his international crossover hit single of the same name, and the follow up single “She Loves Me”, which has started to generate some radio buzz and is already picking up steam. A team of Mario Forsythe, Yohan Blake, Marvin Anderson and Bolt finished in 37.90 seconds for Jamaica Gold, setting a competition record. Bolt took a perfect handoff from Anderson and ran for the final 100 meters to a standing ovation. Bolt's dash lasted an unofficial, but exhilarating 8.79 seconds. Bolt's appearance at the Penn Relays, his first competition of 2010, was responsible for the highest single day attendance of 54,310 in the event's 116-year history. Jamaica is anticipating the opening of its third international airport next month, The Ian Fleming International Airport, located just five miles from Ocho Rios. Formerly known as the Boscobel Airstrip, the facility has undergone refurbishment and has been expanded to facilitate the arrival of private international aircrafts. The Ian Fleming International Airport will allow for easy, efficient and timely processing of small aircraft and passengers. Features of the facility include a passenger lounge, pilot briefing room, customs and immigration clearance, and other specialized services for private flights.
Dance hall artist Kalado had a brief encounter with the law Sunday over what police officers thought were three high-powered rifles found in his possession. It was reported that the police apprehended the entertainer, whose given name is Eton Gordon, in Lakes Pen, Spanish Town in St Catherine as he was making his way to Portmore. He was taken into custody, however, upon closer inspection, it was found that the weapons were fake. Kalado was on his way to a video shoot at the time. The artist was subsequently released.

David "Mavado" Brooks was involved in a Bike accident on Sunday evening, in the Manor park area of Kingston. ReggaeMe understands that Mavado was travelling on his motorcycle with a group of riders at approximately 5:00pm on sunday when a female driver decided to turn into her driveway, cutting across his lane in which he was riding. Mavado was immediately taken to the Medical Associates Hospital in Kingston where he underwent treatment for some minor cuts and bruises. Doctors also did several X-rays inwhich thankfully all came back as showing that mavado was ok.
