A 26-year-old handyman has been found guilty of manslaughter in the March 2006 killing of a Jamaican trade official, whose naked body was discovered in his town house in an upscale Kingston development. Sheldon Pusey had testified that he stabbed the chairman of Jamaica's Trade Board, Peter King, in self defense after he spurned the 63-year-old official's aggressive sexual advances. A jury returned the verdict on Monday. At the time of his death, King was special adviser to the Ministry of Commerce and chairman of the Trade Board, which monitors and certifies goods exported and imported into Jamaica. Sentencing is scheduled for April 1.

My fellow Jamaicans..I have spent the last several days in deep contemplation about the issues that have caused so much anxiety throughout the society including the reaction to my statement in Parliament last Tuesday and the events and circumstances that led up to it. I have listened very carefully to the views expressed by members of the public. I have also consulted with my Cabinet and parliamentary members, the party organization and various civil society groups. I thank those who have expressed their support and have urged me to find a way to deal with these matters and to put them behind. I respect the views of those who feel that, in the circumstances, I should step aside. I have asked God to guide me in my response and the...

Patrons were enjoying themselves at the signature ATI event before a member of Mavado's entourage went onstage during Aidonia's performance and began to bully the selector to stop playing the tracks. This, however, did not go over well with Aidonia who intervened, but the police were quickly alerted and they successfully restored order. Following Aidonia's performance, Mavado made his much-anticipated entrance to the stage where he gave a brief but excellent performance, much to the delight of the patrons. He was quick to make amends for the incident and paused to say "nuh worry people, everything good", before reeling off his chart-topping favourites, which included his recently released Mockingbird. However, it was the 'Energy...
Deejay Sheldon 'Aidonia' Lawrence was freed in the Gun Court on Wednesday. The entertainer was slapped with several charges ranging from conspiracy to shooting, illegal possession of firearm and shooting with intent stemming from an incident in Shortwood, St Andrew, in January 2008. Defence lawyer Valerie Neita-Robertson made an application for the charges to be dismissed for want of prosecution. She submitted that yesterday was the ninth time the case was coming before the court and the witness was never present. A policeman told the court that he spoke to the witness who was allegedly injured during the shooting incident about the court dates but the witness indicated his reluctance to attend court. Supreme Court Judge...

AIR Jamaica could be forced to shut down prematurely, leaving a major gap in air seats to the island, if the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) turns down an urgent request the national airline was making. On March 24, the airline wrote to the DOT asking for permission to continue to operate on the terms of its existing authority during the six-to-12-month transition period expected under the divestment agreement with Caribbean Airlines Limited (CAL), which is to take effect on April 12, 2010. Failing that permission, the airline is asking the Americans for an urgent waiver of the DOT’s standard ownership and control policy, in order for it to maintain services for the one-year period under its Transitional...

Alcohol is more dangerous than illegal drugs like heroin, ecstasy and crack cocaine, a new study has said. Researchers rated alcohol the most dangerous substance based on the overall dangers to the individual and society as a whole. The work was led by Professor David Nutt, the former government drugs adviser who was sacked for criticising the then Labour government's decision to upgrade cannabis from class C to class B. His team analysed how addictive a drug is and how it harms the human body as well as other factors like environmental and socio-economic costs, such as health care, social services, and prison.
