Toots Hibbert of the legendary reggae band Toots and the Maytals is suing his former manager for US$1.25 million dollars.
The 70-year-old Toots Hibbert claims that he hired Marc-Antoine Chetata back in 1994 to manage Toots and the Maytals’ music and business affairs. Hibbert claims Chetata took advantage of the group lack of business knowledge.
The lawsuit claims that Toots was fooled into signing an agreement which gave his former manager 50 per cent ownership of his songs. Toots Hibbert is asking for US$1.25 million in damages as well as full ownership of rights to his songs.
Toots and the Maytals were a huge influence on ska, rock steady, reggae era. They recorded more than 30 albums since the early 1960s.
