Police say four suspects have shot to death a 23-year-old female police officer in Jamaica. Police said Saturday that Arianna Henry was shot near the capital of Kingston late Friday while she was with another police officer on the side of a road. Authorities said a car pulled up and that four men got out and opened fire. The police said Henry's colleague shot back. Henry, 23, was shot at her gate in what during the shoot-out with gunmen shortly after 8:00 Friday. She had been a member of the Island Special Constabulary Force (ISCF) for three years. Officials said Henry died at the hospital while one of the gunmen shot in the exchange showed up at the hospital for treatment and was detained. It is unclear what prompted the shooting.
Flippa Maffia whose real name is Andrew Davis has been slapped with new charges by the New Jersey State Police Crime Suppression South Unit and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). This follows a joint investigation which targeted the shipment of large quantities of cocaine through public delivery services. Flippa Moggela and eight others including the deejays two baby-mothers and brother were arrested and charged. An international drug trafficking organization allegedly led by Andrew Davis aka Flippa Moggela has been dismantled. Flippa is on $500,000US bail and faces charges of Leader of Narcotics Trafficking Network, Distribution of Cocaine, Money Laundering and Conspiracy. Legendary reggae artiste Tony Brevett from the Melodians died Saturday in Miami from complications during his cancer fight. Trevor McNaughton and Tony Brevett were on a U.S. tour commemorating The Melodians' 50th anniversary before Brevett fell ill. The Melodians were best known for their hit, "The Rivers of Babylon." The song was included in the soundtrack of the 1972 movie "The Harder They Come."

Sean Paul won his third Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Award on Saturday October 19, 2013, winning the Best Reggae Act category ahead of Mavado, Tarrus Riley, Popcaan and Stylo G. Sean Paul was not present at the ceremony which was held in Glasgow, Scotland. The MOBO Awards established in 1996 is held annually in the United Kingdom to recognize artists of any ethnicity or nationality performing black music.
The playing of reggae and dancehall music was suspended in Barbados. The suspension began on June 1 and ended today August 05, 2013 to facilitate Crop Over. Those that control the policies of the Barbados music industry are hoping that Bajans will be consuming more of their culture from the media during that period. Crop Over is a traditional festival which began in Barbados, having had its early beginnings on the sugar cane plantations during the colonial period. The festival was originally a celebration signalling the end of the yearly sugar cane harvest. However, it has since evolved into Barbados' biggest national festival, similar to carnivals in Trinidad and Brazil. How do you feel about this?

The family of Singer The Mighty Sparrow is sad to announce that the Calypso King Of The World is in a New York hospital in a coma. The family also asked for privacy while the singer is being treated. Robert Pickersgill made the disclosure in Beijing, where he is accompanying Jamaica's prime minister for a five-day visit. They are meeting with Chinese political and business leaders. (AP) A former Northern Ireland police ombudsman says Jamaican security forces must significantly curb fatal shootings of civilians if they want islanders to trust them. Nuala O'Loan says there is, in her words, an "unparalleled level of police shootings in Jamaica." The former Northern Ireland investigator says she has never seen "police fatal shootings in the way I have seen them here." She says there were 147 fatal shootings by Jamaican police between January and June of this year. In 2012, Jamaican security forces killed 219 people, nine more than in 2011. (AP) Police in Jamaica say they are investigating a significant fraud case at the teachers union and the union's entire accounting staff has been put on leave. The Jamaica Constabulary Force says detectives are "working around the clock" collecting statements and interviews. In a Wednesday statement, the Jamaica Teachers Association says "accounting irregularities" were found during a recent audit. It did not disclose any specifics about the extent of the irregularities. The union says that it is cooperating fully with police and that the fraud investigation does not involve its credit union. (AP) United States Sprinter Tyson Gay failed more than one drug test this year, recording one of his positives at the US championships in June, where he won the 100 and 200 metres,The Associated Press learned on Friday. Earlier this month, Gay revealed he had tested positive in an out-of-competition test he took May 16. Three people familiar with the case told the AP that Gay had multiple positives this year. One of those people said one positive came at nationals and the US Anti-Doping Agency has notified him of that result. Buju Banton is breathing a sigh of relief after a Federal Judge dismissed his gun charge last week, which would have attach an additional five years to his sentance. Judge James Moody also dismissed the reggae artiste application for a new trial on the grounds that the juror misconduct was not enough. Beres Hammond was due to perform at the popular venue in Greenwich alongside fellow reggae stars Morgan Heritage and Marcia Griffiths as part of the Beres and Friends UK tour. Beres Hammond failed to show up for the concert in east London's IndigO2 on Wednesday July 17, 2013 after one of his band member was denied entry into the UK. Mikey Jarrett Jr., the road manager for Reggae artiste Junior Reid ,died on Tuesday June 04, 2013 from an apperent heart attack while in Miami, Florida. Jarrett was a part of the One Blood family for over fifteen years and was instrumental in the professional advancement of the careers of Junior Reid and his sons Andrew & Wadada Blood. A bus carrying the members of reggae group Inner Circle crashed in Louisiana on Tuesday Jun 04, 2013. The accident happened on I-10 at around 3:30 p.m. The band was reportedly on the bus at the time of the accident, however there were no major injuries resulting from the crash. Local police reports suggest a blown tyre sent the tourbus careering into the median of the Interstate 10 freeway just outside Baton Rouge. Inner Circle is currently in the midst of a summer tour, with the next performance scheduled for Ojai, California, on June 06, 2013. No word on if the tour bus accident will affect the band's upcoming events.
Mexico got its first victory in CONCACAF's final round of World Cup qualifying Tuesday night, beating Jamaica 1-0 on Aldo de Nigris' goal. The Mexicans team had drawn all three previous games, but the win lifted them atop the six-team group while having played one more game than four other teams, including the United States. Jamaica slipped to 0-2-2 and is last in qualifying. The top three teams advance to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, while the fourth-place team faces a playoff with New Zealand.
Toots Hibbert of the legendary reggae band Toots and the Maytals is suing his former manager for US$1.25 million dollars. The 70-year-old Toots Hibbert claims that he hired Marc-Antoine Chetata back in 1994 to manage Toots and the Maytals’ music and business affairs. Hibbert claims Chetata took advantage of the group lack of business knowledge. The lawsuit claims that Toots was fooled into signing an agreement which gave his former manager 50 per cent ownership of his songs. Toots Hibbert is asking for US$1.25 million in damages as well as full ownership of rights to his songs. Toots and the Maytals were a huge influence on ska, rock steady, reggae era. They recorded more than 30 albums since the early 1960s.
